چکیده

Warning sounds are necessary to promptly alert workers of events that can compromise safety. A wide range of strategies, including verbal and non-verbal signals have been used in different environments (Edworthy & Adams 1996; Haas & Edworthy 2006; Edworthy & Hellier 2006). Unfortunately, the use of warning signals in industry is often submitted to intuitive installation practices with little regard to the many factors contributing to an efficient and safe use (Tran Quoc & Hétu 1996). There may also be a mismatch between auditory demands and capabilities in the workplace (Hétu 1994). Failure to react to alarms can increase the risk of accidents.

Speech Intelligibility and the Detection of Auditory Alarms and Warnings in Noisy Industrial Environments

Issues affecting speech intelligibility and audibility/detectability of auditory displays in the industrial workplace will be presented. Topics will include design guidelines, standards, and relevant research from the literature. Examples of experimental results will be presented from research conducted in Virginia Tech’s Auditory Systems Laboratory.

Comparative Study of Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm Applied for Noisy Non-Linear Optimization Problems

Optimization of noisy non-linear problems plays a key role in engineering and design problems. These optimization problems can't be solved effectively by using conventional optimization methods. However, metaheuristic algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) seem very efficient to approach in these problems and became very popular. The efficiency of these ...

Optimal Placement of Phasor Measurement Units to Maintain CompleteObservability Considering Maximum Reliability by Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II)

Ever-increasing energy demand has led to geographic expansion of transmission lines and their complexity. In addition, higher reliability is expected in the transmission systemsdue to their vital role in power systems. It is very difficult to realize this goal by conventional monitoring and control methods. Thus, phasor measurement units (PMUs) are used to measure system parameters. Although in...

Cross-cultural study on feasible sound levels of possible warning sounds for quiet vehicles

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, reduced noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible due to background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl, internoise 2007). The installation of devices that produce warn...

‌Optimal design of onboard energy storage systems with volume limitation for urban electrical rail transportation

Train braking energy regeneration in urban electrical rail transportation systems can reduce energy consumption and operational cost of the system. In this paper, optimal design of an onboard energy storage system (OESS) with volume constraint is presented for urban electrical rail transportation systems (ERTS). Onboard super-capacitors are considered as the storage system. The objective functi...
